My littler kid can’t yet do his own toothpaste; he squeezes out too much. I have to put it on the brush for him.

Sometimes I’ll send him upstairs to get ready for bed, and he used to do NOTHING until I got there, waiting for me to do his toothpaste. So I tell him–“baby, do all the stuff you CAN do before you let the one thing you’re stuck on stall you.”

He’s got it now. When I come up, he’s ready for bed in every way except just that one thing.

Note to self: Having a plot knot in the upcoming chapter must not distract me from finishing THIS one. Finish it! Just do it! Worry about that upcoming plot knot AFTER I’ve done everything that isn’t problematic.

Signed, easily distracted me

From “Envoy” by Billy Collins, a message to his just-published book:

"stay out as late as you like,
don't bother to call or write,
and talk to as many strangers as you can."
